AFSEC–IECEx International Seminar

Following on the success of earlier similar seminars, this seminar will be another opportunity for experts, senior staff and professionals from the electrotechnical sectors of the African continent, including stakeholders, regulators and policy-makers, to discover and familiarize themselves with the IEC Conformity Assessment System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx System).

PIESA Conference 2015, scheduled for 23 – 25 February in Mangochi, Malawi

“Power Distribution Challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa” will be the vehicle to showcase our case studies in the format of panel discussions where members will highlight the burning issues faced by the utilities, with the affiliate members available to contribute to the discussions and create opportunities for addressing these challenges.

Fourth General Assembly 10-12 September 2014 , Kinshasa


The Fourth AFSEC General Assembly was hosted in Kinshasa D R Congo by the Government and National Electrotechnical Committee of the D R Congo at La Grand Hotel, Kinshasa.  Please click here to register for the AFSEC General Assembly.

 

 

The events comprised the main General Assembly from 12-13 September 2014, preceded by closed meetings for the AFSEC management and invited partner organizations on 10 and 11 September. The general assembly included a workshop on the theme "The role of standardization in regional integration"

AFRICAN ELECTROTECHNICAL STANDARDIZATION COMMISSION

DATES: 26 - 29 August 2013

Statutory Members and affiliate members of AFSEC, National Committees of the IEC in Africa and African countries participating in the IEC Affiliate Country Programme are hereby invited to submit their registration for delegates to participate in
a)      The IECEE/AFSEC seminar on the IECEE conformity assessment system  26-27 August 2013, and
b)       the third AFSEC general assembly, 28-29 August 2013.

Both events took place in Nairobi Kenya, hosted by the Kenyan National Committee of the IEC, with the support of the Kenya Bureau of Standards, the IEC and AFSEC.
 
Attached you will find the detailed programme containing and below link to the on-line registration form.While all are welcome, the logistics for these events requires that the following guidelines will apply for registration of delegates:

  • Statutory members of AFSEC may register up to two delegates*;
  • Affiliate members of AFSEC,
  • IEC National Committees in Africa not yet members of AFSEC, and
  • African countries in the IEC Affiliate Country Programme may register one delegate*.

 
*One additional delegate may be registered for each of the events, on application to the AFSEC secretariat, but acceptance will be subject to space limitations and on a first come, first served basis. You are therefore encouraged to register the names of your delegates as quickly as possible. Registration will close on 31 July 2013.
 
Delegates are requested to indicate clearly on the registration form whether they are attending the IECEE seminar, or the AFSEC General Assembly, or both events.
 
Should you not be in a position to advise the flight details when registering, please do not delay the submission of your registration. Flight details can be submitted later to admin@afsec-africa.org
 
Please note that unless otherwise advised individually, delegates are each responsible to arrange their own accommodation in Nairobi. A further, final announcement of the events will be sent to you during June, to confirm the venue and suggested options for accommodation. The organisers will follow up with each delegate individually after the closing date for registration to confirm travel and accommodation arrangements.

In August 2012, AFSEC will facilitate a workshop for stakeholders and practitioners to share the existing knowledge on what standards and practices exist to support rural electrification. Presentations on case studies from Africa will be invited and examined to understand what has been successful or otherwise and to understand why. The workshop will be co-located with meetings of the AFSEC technical committees to maximize the exchange of information among technical experts.

Please note that the duration of the event is now three days, from Tuesday 28th August to Thursday 30th August 2012.

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR REGISTRATION

In support of the harmonization of electrotechnical standards in order to facilitate the interconnection of the African power grid, the African Electrotechnical Standardization Commission (AFSEC) has planned from 5 to 6 September 2011 at Hotel RedCourt, Nairobi in Kenya, a capacity building workshop for Electrotechnical Standardization in collaboration with the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), AFREC (African Energy Commission) and AUC (African Union Commission).

The second general assembly of AFSEC took place at the Eskom Academy of Learning [Eskom Convention Centre], Midrand, near Johannesburg on 12th and 13th August 2010. It was preceded by a workshop on 10th and 11th August to consider the priorities for the standardization activities of AFSEC and to make proposals for the establishment the technical committees of AFSEC. This workshop thus marks the start of the operational activities of AFSEC.

THE AFRICAN ELECTROTECHNICAL STANDARDIZATION COMMISSION (AFSEC) INAUGURATION AND CONSTITUTIVE GENERAL ASSEMBLY WAS HELD IN ACCRA, GHANA - 26TH TO 28TH FEBRUARY 2008

The Inauguration of the CGA was chaired by the Executive Director of the Energy Commission of Ghana, Dr. Alfred K. Ofosu Ahenkorah.

The opening speeches acknowledged the stakeholder working group that had spearheaded the establishment of AFSEC.

The welcoming speech was given by The Executive Director of the Ghana Standards Board, followed by messages of support from the President of ARSO, and representatives of the IEC and CENELEC. To mark the occasion, a commemorative plaque was presented to AFSEC on behalf of the IEC.

An address by the UPDEA President, Mr J Ofedie, followed, in which he paid tribute to the members of the working group for the establishment of AFSEC, and the UPDEA Study Committee for standardization. In this and subsequent addresses by  the Executive Director of AFREC, Dr Elhag, and by the representative of the African Union, M. Niyongabo it was evident that the establishment of AFSEC was widely perceived as necessary, and that AFSEC was poised to play an important role in the development of the continent. The Constitutive General Assembly was then formally opened by the Minister of Trade, Industry, PSI and PSD for Ghana, Mr. Joe Baidoo-Ansah.

The Management Committee will comprise:

The President, 3 Vice Presidents, a Treasurer, and 10 members being representative of the 5 sub-regions (2 for each sub region). AFREC and UPDEA will also hold permanent seats in the Management Committee.
M. KOUTOUA Claude: CIE, Côte d’Ivoire, was elected as President of AFSEC.
Charles Okoro: SON, Nigeria was confirmed as First Vice President [Technical Committees]
Mrs Evah Oduor: KEBS, Kenya was confirmed as Second Vice President [Conformity Assessment Committee]
GUEYE Mamadou: Proquelec, Senegal was confirmed as Third Vice President, with the special task of expediting the formation of national committees in member states.
The position of Treasurer has not yet been filled.

In addition to the elected officer bearers, the following National Committees represented at the CGA were confirmed as founding members in the Management Committee of AFSEC:  

North Africa: Egypt, Libya
East Africa: Sudan, one more to be elected
Central Africa: None, two to be elected
West Africa: Ghana, Benin
Southern Africa: South Africa, one more to be elected

Elections for the vacant positions identified will take place in accordance with the statutes.

It is hoped that many more African States will soon form their national electrotechnical committees and become members of AFSEC.
